Is Social Entrepreneurship Crowding Out Regular ‘Ol Entrepreneurship?

Look on any campus or newstand today and you will find no shortage of programs and events dedicated social entrepreneurship.

I think this is great and long overdue. However, will there come a point when there is too much of a good thing? Are we already there?

Could the massive movement toward social entrepreneurship mean fewer folks starting the next microsoft or google?

Now some may say that social entrepreneurship needn’t be mutually exclusive with making money and growing a large business. This is true, but I haven’t seen too many profit-orientated social enterprises with significant scale – the kind of scale that is important for economic growth. My hope is that someone will figure out how to do this so that we can get social, environmental AND economic benefits – with the latter being particularly important in this economy.
